    What is J'Ouvert?

J'Ouvert (pronounced "jou-vay") kicks off before sunrise on Independence Day. Steel pan and soca trucks roll from the Enighed Pond ball field through town while thousands of locals and visitors "tramp" behind them, covered in paint, powder, and mud. It is loud, joyful, and the single most authentic Carnival moment on St. John. Wear white you never want to see again.

Our recommended pre-party is at The Upstairs on July 3 — $10 gets you in and covers a raffle ticket.

The Parade Route (July 4, 11 AM)

The troupes stage on Route 104 near the school and wind down through Mongoose Junction, along the waterfront, past the ferry dock, and end near the Legislature building. Best viewing spots without fighting for a seat:

    • Mongoose Junction sidewalks — shaded, close to bathrooms and coffee
    • The wall by the National Park Visitor Center — elevated, breezy, harbor breeze
    • Wharfside Village upper deck — sit-down, order a drink, watch the whole route

Fireworks: Where to Watch from the Water

The fireworks launch from a barge in Cruz Bay Harbor at 9 PM. The single best view is from a boat. A private sunset charter that stages in the harbor gives you an unbeatable view without the parking chaos.

    Getting There & Parking

    • From St. Thomas: Take the Red Hook ferry — extra boats run on July 4. Last return trip is 11 PM but plan for 10 PM to be safe.
    • Parking in Cruz Bay: Nearly impossible on parade day. Park at the Creek lot and walk in, or arrive before 9 AM.
    • Taxi share: Safari taxis run a $5 loop from The Westin to town all day.

    What to Bring

Sunscreen (reef-safe — it is the law), cash for food fair vendors, a small backpack, and a rain shell. Afternoon showers are almost guaranteed.

    After the Parade

Cruz Bay's bars stay packed until 2 AM. For a quieter evening, head to Windmill Bar for a hilltop view of the fireworks with breathing room.
