All 9 Must-Hike Trails
Ram Head Trail
The #1 rated hike on St. John — dramatic cliffs and 360° ocean views
Starting at Salt Pond Bay Beach, this iconic trail takes you along the coastline past Blue Cobblestone Beach to the Ram Head peninsula — the southernmost point of St. John. The summit rewards hikers with 360-degree views of the Caribbean Sea, neighboring islands, and cactus-covered cliffs. It's the most photographed trail in the USVI and rated 4.8 stars on AllTrails with 1,400+ reviews.
How to Get There
35-minute drive from Cruz Bay via Route 107 to Salt Pond Bay parking. You'll need a car or taxi — no bus service. Small parking lot shared with beachgoers.
Highlights
Tip: Go early morning to avoid heat — there's zero shade at the summit. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person. Reward yourself with a swim at Salt Pond Bay after.
Reef Bay Trail
St. John's most popular hike — ruins, petroglyphs, and a waterfall
The crown jewel of Virgin Islands National Park hiking, Reef Bay Trail descends 937 feet over 2.4 miles through tropical forest to the Reef Bay coast. Along the way, you'll explore abandoned sugar plantation ruins, mysterious Taino petroglyphs carved centuries ago, and (after rain) a waterfall. The NPS offers guided tours with boat pickup at the bottom.
How to Get There
Trailhead is on Centerline Road (Route 10) about 4.5 miles from Cruz Bay. NPS guided tours include transportation from the Visitor Center and boat pickup at the bottom ($40/person, advance reservation required).
Highlights
Tip: Book the NPS guided tour months in advance — it includes a boat ride back to Cruz Bay so you don't have to hike uphill. Bring bug spray for the lower forest sections.
Lind Point Trail
Walk from Cruz Bay to Honeymoon Beach — no car needed
The most accessible trail on St. John, Lind Point starts directly behind the Cruz Bay Visitor Center — perfect if you arrive by ferry without a car. The lower path hugs the coastline to Salomon Bay and Honeymoon Beach. The upper path climbs to the 140-foot Lind Point Battery Outlook with panoramic views of Cruz Bay harbor and St. Thomas.
How to Get There
Walk behind the Cruz Bay NPS Visitor Center. No car needed — the trailhead is a 2-minute walk from the ferry dock.
Highlights
Tip: Take the upper trail for the view, then descend to Honeymoon Beach for swimming. Bring snorkeling gear — Salomon Bay has excellent reef.
Johnny Horn Trail
Mountain ridge hike with Waterlemon Cay views and historic ruins
Named after Johan Horn, an 18th-century Danish merchant, this trail traces a mountain ridge through closed-canopy forest connecting Waterlemon Bay to the Emmaus Moravian Church in Coral Bay. You'll pass the old Danish guardhouse ruins with views over the Fungi Passage, the Murphy House estate ruins, and Boss Hill's panorama of Hurricane Hole and Virgin Gorda.
How to Get There
Access from the Leinster Bay trailhead near Annaberg Plantation, or from the Emmaus Church in Coral Bay. About 25 minutes from Cruz Bay by car.
Highlights
Tip: Combine with snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay — it's one of the best snorkeling spots in the USVI. Start from the Annaberg side for a downhill finish.
Bordeaux Mountain Trail
St. John's highest point — steep descent through changing ecosystems
At 1,088 feet, Bordeaux Mountain is the highest point on St. John. This trail descends steeply from the summit through shady forest that transitions to dry scrub as you drop to Lameshur Bay. The trail crew has built swales to prevent erosion, but the grade is relentless. Going up is a serious workout.
How to Get There
Drive Centerline Road (Route 10) to the Bordeaux Mountain trailhead parking area. About 30 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Highlights
Tip: Go downhill to Lameshur Bay and arrange a ride back, rather than climbing up. Bring plenty of water — the lower sections have little shade.
Francis Bay Trail
Easy family walk with birdwatching and historic estate ruins
A short, rewarding trail that passes the Mary Point Great House ruins (19th-century Creque family estate) and leads to a handicapped-accessible boardwalk overlooking Francis Bay Pond — a prime birdwatching spot. The trail ends at the quiet north end of Francis Bay Beach.
How to Get There
Drive North Shore Road to Mary Creek Road. Park at the end of the paved section. About 20 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Highlights
Tip: Bring binoculars — the saltwater pond attracts herons, pelicans, and seasonal migratory birds. Great for families with young children.
Leinster Bay Trail
Flat shoreline walk to world-class snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay
A flat, easy trail along the Leinster Bay shoreline to Waterlemon Bay — one of the best snorkeling spots in all of the Virgin Islands. The trail passes the ruins of the Leinster Bay Plantation, thick mangroves, and maho trees. On clear days, the views of the deep blue ocean and neighboring islands are spectacular.
How to Get There
Park at the Annaberg Plantation parking lot (free). The trail starts at the end of the parking area. About 25 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Highlights
Tip: Bring full snorkeling gear — swim to Waterlemon Cay from the trail's end for some of the best reef in the USVI. Watch for sea turtles in the grass beds.
Peace Hill & Windmill Ruins
5-minute walk to panoramic north shore views
The shortest and easiest 'hike' on St. John, but arguably the best view-to-effort ratio in the USVI. A 0.2-mile walk leads to a hilltop with a semi-restored 18th-century windmill ruin and sweeping 360-degree views of Hawksnest Bay, Denis Bay, and the north coast. The constant trade winds keep it cool at the top.
How to Get There
Parking area on North Shore Road, about half a mile east of Hawksnest Beach. Look for the sign. About 10 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Highlights
Tip: Best at sunset — the windmill silhouette against the sky is iconic. A 0.2-mile spur trail leads down to Denis Bay beach.
Cinnamon Bay Heritage Trail
Walk through 300 years of island history in 30 minutes
This short trail passes three eras of St. John's economy: sugar plantation ruins with a visible horse mill and factory, a bay rum distillery surrounded by fragrant bay trees, and evidence of the subsistence farming period. The Cinnamon Bay archaeological site is one of the most significant in the Caribbean.
How to Get There
Park at the Cinnamon Bay Beach lot (free) on North Shore Road. The trail starts behind the campground area. About 15 minutes from Cruz Bay.
Highlights
Tip: Combine with a beach day at Cinnamon Bay — it's one of St. John's best beaches. The trail is shaded and cool even midday.
