St. John is the quieter, more pristine dive destination in the US Virgin Islands. With two-thirds of the island protected as Virgin Islands National Park, the surrounding reefs are remarkably healthy, fish-rich, and uncrowded — most dive boats carry only 6–12 divers.
Departing from Cruz Bay, dive boats reach world-class sites in 15–30 minutes — including underwater pinnacles like Eagle Shoal, the wall dive at Carval Rock, and the historic Tektite underwater habitat site off Lameshur Bay. With warm 78–86°F water year-round and visibility often topping 80 feet, St. John delivers some of the most peaceful diving in the Caribbean.
What Makes St. John Scuba Diving St. John Special?
Protected National Park Reefs
Most St. John dive sites sit inside or alongside Virgin Islands National Park — healthier coral, more fish, and far fewer divers in the water.
Iconic Sites
Eagle Shoal, Carval Rock, Congo Cay, Grass Cay, Mounty Point, and the historic Tektite habitat site off Lameshur Bay.
Short Boat Rides
Most sites are 15–30 minutes from Cruz Bay — more bottom time, less travel time compared to many Caribbean destinations.
All Skill Levels
Discover Scuba intros, PADI/SSI Open Water certifications, two-tank reef dives, and advanced wall and current dives.
Top St. John Dive Sites
Eagle Shoal (advanced, 30–90 ft): A submerged pinnacle south of St. John known for large pelagics — eagle rays, reef sharks, and big schools of jacks. Currents can be strong; for experienced divers only.
Carval Rock (wall dive, 30–80 ft): A dramatic wall on the north side with sponges, soft coral, and frequent eagle ray sightings.
Congo & Grass Cays (30–60 ft): Easy reef and ledge dives between St. John and St. Thomas — ideal for newer divers and refresher dives.
Maho Bay & North Shore Reefs (15–40 ft): Easy reef dives just offshore from St. John's most famous beaches — turtles, rays, and healthy hard coral.
Tektite Habitat Site (Lameshur Bay): Historic site of the 1969 underwater habitat experiment — easy reef dive with cultural significance.
Cruz Bay Dive Operators & Certifications
Two main operators run dive trips from Cruz Bay: Low Key Watersports and Cruz Bay Watersports. Both offer Discover Scuba intros, PADI/SSI Open Water certifications, refreshers, and daily two-tank boat dives.
Two-tank boat dives depart Cruz Bay around 8:30 AM and return by lunchtime. Expect $140–$180 per certified diver including tanks, weights, and a divemaster.
Open Water certification is a 3–4 day program ($450–$550). Pre-completing classroom eLearning before your trip lets you spend more time in the water.
Shore diving on St. John is limited compared to St. Thomas — most diving is done from boats out of Cruz Bay.

Pro Tips from the Locals
💡Don't dive and fly on the same day — wait at least 18–24 hours after diving (DAN guidelines).
💡Book morning two-tank trips for the calmest seas and best visibility.
💡Combine a dive trip with a stop at Honeymoon Beach or Waterlemon Cay for surface intervals.
💡If you're not certified, a Discover Scuba session in Cruz Bay is a great half-day introduction.
💡Reef-safe sunscreen is required by USVI law — apply well before gearing up.
💡Best visibility runs January through June; plankton blooms can reduce viz slightly in late summer.
